View Full Version : Reglueing fingerboard binding

I bought what looks like a kit mandolin, and yesterday while playing it, noticed that about 2-3" of the binding on the bottom side of the neck has come loose [bottom, as in-- the side facing the floor when you hold it.]

The loose area is the 2-3" right before the nut. I pressed the binding back into place, and it looks like a small amount of glue would keep it there.

Does anyone have tips on how to do a home fix job on this?
Can I use DUCO, or superglue, or white wood glue, or is there a better option? -- Thanks. -- Sheryl

If you are confident in your ability to keep it completely off of the finish, superglue is a good fix for loose bindings. If any gets on the finish, that's a problem. Same with Duco, it eats lacquer too.
White glue is much safer. If can be cleaned off of the finish with a damp rag, but will not hold the binding as securely as superglue.

The neck on the instrument appears to be oiled, not varnished. #[Actually the whole instrument is a matte finish, not varnished.] #Does this change the glue advice? #I posted a pix of it at this link (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=8;t=47423)

FWIW varnish can be matte.

Any finish can be "matte", or in the case of instruments more likely "satin". It isn't an indicator of what the finish is.

You need to keep superglue off of any finish, and duco off of most finishes, so my advise above is safe for whatever you have.
