A friend of mine from England will be in the Williamsburg (Va) area for the second half of August. He is keen to "discover" Bluegrass as it is today in its original setting. Does anyone know of any festivals or concerts in the area around then that I can point him towards?
Thanks for your help.

"In the area" is a little vague without knowing travel capability. #

Aug 13-15 is Floyd Fest in Floyd, Va with Nickel Creek, David Grisman, Mountain Heart and others.
Aug 27-29 is the Gettysburg, PA festival with a wonderful line up (Performers) (http://www.gettysburgbluegrass.com/gb_artists.cfm).

Both of those are 5-6 hour drives but would be worth it..

The public radio station in DC has a Bluegrass Bulletin Board (http://www.wamu.org/bulletin.html) but you'll need to check that closer to the date. #They list things centered around DC but have things listed pretty far south at times.

Galax, Aug. 9 10 11 12 13 14.
Not stage acts, but bluegrass and old time played by some of the best in a "campground" situation.
Might be too early tho.

Good point about "in the area". I am not sure what the motivation will be to travel as he is not a Bluegrass fan today but is interested enough to go find some.
Thanks anyway for the pointers. I shall pass on.

For the "after mid-August" timeframe, try Central Virginia Family Bluegrass Festival at Amelia Courthouse, VA, August 19-21, 2004.

Amelia is approximately 95 miles from Williamsburg -- 1 hour & 45 minutes driving time.

They usually have quality headliners -- Rhonda Vincent, Lonesome River Band, IIIrd Tyme Out, etc.

I tried their festival link at http://www.ameliavirginiabluegrass.com/ but it isn't working at the moment.
