View Full Version : mic in the wind

We played an outdoor gig last weekend with an AKG 3000 mic. It was quite gusty and the wind really made that mic howl. I did some searching and it appears that you can't buy a cover for those large diaphram mics as they are really intended for studio use. I am wondering if anybody has any home remdies for making a wind sock or where a guy could buy some of that foam material that is used for the small diapram mics? Any help would be much appreciated.

We have had two shows, both along a river, where we had the same problem with wind. In both cases, it came from one side (the left in both cases, oddly enough), so I took a small piece of stiff paper (in the second case, the envelope from a mandolin string) and taped it to the side of the shock mount. It is sort of cheesy solution, but it worked perfectly, and no one seemed to notice. Without it, we would not have been heard. I always plan to make a better one out of clear, stiffer plastic, but never get around to it.

I think you answered your own question. A sock is a quick solution. Get one of those thin black dress socks and cut it to size, slip it over the mic and secure with a rubber band. It might interfere with volume so get the thinnest material you can find.

Oh sure you can...
I haven't looked, but I'd be surprised if Radio Shack didn't carry them...
Or a Google search comes up with places like this (http://www.olsenaudio.com/general.html) that carry windscreens for any mic imaginable...
I'd use a real windscreen instead of a sock...
It would probably sound better and you wouldn't have to worry about getting athelete's mic...

Well, it would be best not to have worn that sock before putting it on the mic http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
