Been compiling another set of "seasonal mix" discs, especially useful if you're throwing a get together or party.

Halloween seems to be an odd grab-bag of material, at least in the US. #You've got (and there's overlap between categories):

1) The Supernatural & ghost tales (pre-Christian in origin or pagan/heathen residue), ritual human sacrifice, voodoo

2) Devil stuff, demons, Hellfire, brimstone and all that, the grim reaper

3) Monster stuff ala the movies (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.) or TV (Adams Family, Munsters, etc)

4) now expandeded to the creepshow psycho/serial killings ala slasher flicks, cannibalism

5) and "mysterioso vibe" songs or instrumentals - just cause they are creepy or atmospheric, but nothing particular Halloweeney about them otherwise

'It's just the night' - Del McCoury Band

Also, it's the epitome of cheesiness, but it seems some Meatloaf might fit in somewhere in your list ('Bat out of hell', or 'Hot Summer Night', if only for the ludicrous dialogue at the beginning - "...would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red rose?"

And don't forget Zappa's "The Torture Never Stops"

Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo, great Halloween party tune.

The creepiest new tune I've heard recently is "In the Basement," from the Generation Nation album by Darol Anger's Republic of Strings, sung by Aoife O'Donovan. And it's acoustic string music too (although no mandolin). You can hear a preview on the iTunes music store.

Sorry about this, but as I'm a fan #I will have to add in the entire back cataloug of the punk band the MISFITS.

I really have no idea if any of this could ever be played on the Mandolin.

Just a FEW of the songs

Vampira
Ghouls Night Out
Mommy Can I go Kill Tonight?
Crimson Ghost
American Psycho
Pumpkin Head
Fiend Club

Their whole on stage shtik and music is based on fiftys “B” grade monster movies.

Wow, discusing the Misfits on the MANDOLIN CAFE that has to be a first.

Nice call Jamie - Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is my all-time favorite Halloween song. Great tune to crank up while dispersing treats.

Also, don't forget the amazing Roky Erickson catalogue:

I Walked With A Zombie
If You Have Ghosts
A Cold Night For Alligators...

It'll go on #6, along with "Midnight Rambler (Stones), "Scream Thy Last Scream" (Syd Barrett), "Hoochie Coochie Man" (can't decide between Muddy or the Allmans rave-up). #Mave I'll clip a bit of Count Floyd audio off some 2nd City TV dvds. Should tape the intro music for the Hitchcock TV (and Twilight Zone) show too.

Need more blues/r&B "Hoodoo" related stuff. John-the-conqueroo, mojohand, crossroads, 7th son and that type of stuff. #

Not as much UK trad supernatural stuff as I first though either.

Don't have any Roky Erikson except a fairly recent live show I taped off XM. Have to play that one and hear what's on it.

I always thought Maxwell's Silver Hammer was pretty creepy. Massachusett's Mining Disaster is another weird vibe. But for me the 1970's cult hit, D.O.A. is the all time yuck factor winner.

Definately include "Monster Mash". If he's the same guy I'm thinking about didn't Bobby Pickett pass away earlier this year?

Also, didn't see "Footsteps So Near" by HotRize. Kind of a Ghost Story to it. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

Glad to see that "Season of the Witch" finally got mentioned. I prefer the original version by Donovan on the "Sunshine Superman" album; Stills, Bloomfield, and Kooper also did a neat version on the "Supersessions" album. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

<Definately include "Monster Mash". If he's the same guy I'm thinking about didn't Bobby Pickett pass away earlier this year?>

Bobby "Boris" Pickett. The local public radio station
re-played a recent interview with him when he passed away. He sounded like a pretty happy guy. Of course he did other stuff, but he was basically able to live a quite comfortable existence off the royalties from "Monstor Mash". That kind of thing always amazes me. One song. It seems so easy. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
