Collings MT (http://www.12fret.com/used/index.html#MAND&BANJ)
This one has been for sale at 12th Fret for nearly 3 wks now - I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet. About 6 months ago, this store had a used Collings MT with a long crack starting at the treble F-hole - it sold in days for $1600.
Am I missing something here?

I didn't know retail instrument sales was a spectator sport! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
Bottom line - six months ago someone with the money wanted one. Right now, not so much.

You joined the cafe two years ago and you didn't know that everything mandolin is a spectator sport? # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

no top binding....some top wear...
also the canadian dollar is actually stronger than the US one right now!!! So their approximation is way off. also-for US buyers there are various importing fees. likely in the area of 50+ on top of shipping.

FWIW... (and this is a big sore spot with me... I've been charged widely varied extortion fees to get stuff across the Canadian border...) ... this is from the 12th Fret website.
"Note: Instruments made in the United States, Canada or Mexico are not subject to duty if shipped within North America per the NAFTA treaty. No tax is charged at the Canadian end if an instrument is exported out of Canada. Only GST is charged if an instrument is shipped out of province within Canada. Instruments made outside North America are subject to duty if shipped from Canada to the U.S."
And, as of 10.15.07 at 1:50pm Eastern US time, the website XE.com shows $1.00USD = $0.97622CDN.

I don't think the 12th Fret removes the "sold" instruments in a timely manner,... because I bought this mandolin a week ago and right now it's lounging around in my music room!
It sure is a nice instrument, I can't seem to put it down.
Qoute:"also the canadian dollar is actually stronger than the US one right now!!! So their approximation is way off"
Acually they are dead on. I was just in Canada and exchange is $105CA for $100USA

Yeah I looked that up too. I was a bit suprised but it means Brad is correct and the Canadian dollar is just slightly stronger than the American.

These do have top tortoise binding, and the few I've played are very strong instruments. There is one locally that has caught my eye. I borrowed it for a festival gig last weekend and got huge complements on how it sounded in the mix (single mike with a 5-piece band). I'm going to buy it to have a backup to my Arches. It's already proven itself to me, even though it needs a new nut...
Congrats on the purchase Kermit. I'm sure it'll serve you well.
Best,
Ken

i meant the ivoroid top binding which commands a higher resale price.

Thanks! It's the nicest mandolin I've ever played, although I have to admit I haven't played very many.
It seems to me to be brand-new, although I know it's not. The description said the finish was 9/10, but I honestly can't see any wear at all. I bought a guitar from the 12th Fret a few years ago, and it was a similar experience; really professional. I highly recommend them.
Cheers

i have to agree with steve. i've called the 12th fret and gotten an estimate on shipping. that plus those "fees", makes finding and buying something stateside a better deal. there are a lot of mt's out there. hard not to find a good one. i did however play a stellar one at the music emporium this past february.
not sure the white binding does much for me though. now, if it were a blonde one.....mmmm
I highly recommend them.
Cheers
Same here, they are great, bought my banjo there, probably will trade it in there too, when i'm ready to upgrade.
