I was once told that a Tacoma mandolin would not work for bluegrass. If not, why? Was this just preference of the person who said that? BTW I have never played one. Just
curious. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I have an early M1. Really nice playing instrument. Doesn't have the sound or volume for bluegrass.

Tacoma mandolins are flat top and back mandolins, basically they are 'little guitars'. The typical bluegrass mandolin is an archtop F hole instrument, and has a very different kind of tone and usually more projection in a group setting. I like both flattop mandolins and archtop mandolins, but they are very different animals. How you use them is up to you.

Church 'grass wouldn't be as competitive for volume as Jams and outdoor gigs.
they are a re styled flat top, after all.
but if everyone else is considerate on co-operative sound mix...
