View Full Version : grass is dead
was down in florida this week, and my cousin took me out to what i think is a weekly gig on wednesdays in jupiter/juno?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif somewhere just north of west palm at a place called the thirsty turtle. the band is "grass is dead" they are the acoustic outlet of a gd coverband called crazy fingers. what a blast. guitar, bass, mando, fiddle-banjo (the guy switches). if you like the dead and you like bluegrass/newgrass styling, you will love it. great harmonies and the mando player was super.if in fla-go check em out.

Maybe black electrical tape would've clashed with the finish...

The Grass was Dead was just added to the Live Music Archive. If you are not farmilar it is a site where live shows are posted for folks to download. The bands on the site all OK the posting. There are no Grass was Dead shows on there...yet.

Crazy Fingers played at my brother's wedding in March!
During the ceremony, the guitar player played the mandolin the whole time! It was awesome!

Ira,
Was the mandolin/fiddle players name Billy Gilmore? I saw them once as "The Grass is Dead" and the second time as "Almost Acoustic". I usually get to see them once a year here in PA. I absolutely love them. They love what they do and it really shows. I particularly love it (hold on to your hats traditionalists) when Billy uses a Whah pedal with his fiddle. If you haven't seen them or heard them you should give them a listen. They would even get the traditionalist tapping their toes. Last I knew Billy was using a Kentucky mandolin with one of the scrolls broken off. If I win the lottery I shall buy Billy a better mandolin of his choice. He certainly deserves it! PS They have great original material as well!
just went to their site (which by the way has a bunch of tunes you can download-gomorah is killer). the guys name is brent hopper. billy gilmore it seems is the banjo/fiddle dude. check out the site if interested:

Yes its a Kentucky mandolin..with Duct tape for feedback.
I have played with Billy a number of times...awesome guy and great player.
He and three of US from Hcikory Project just realeased a CD last week called "little fields" We recorded it at Billys' studio this past winter and its all live with no over dubs except Billy adding bass after it was complete. Cory (gux) from Crazy Fingers, grass is dead, #mixed it.
you can read/listen more about it either at
www.billygilmore.com or www.hickoryproject.com
It came out really well.. Look for Billy doing some gigs with HP in the future.
All and all..if your in South Florida..they are well worth checking out..they groove for sure.

thp- the night i saw them the mando player was not bily gilmore (at least not from the pics on the site, but the dude with the beard and the rasta hat, and he was playin an old kay. i guess they switch off as i see bgilmore playing mando and the other guy playin guitar in the pics on bg's site. these guys must be multiinstrumental, they are sure multitalented.
as you've played with them, how does the ducttape work to limit feedback? (please excuse my ignorance,as i'm new to amping the mando.)
Hey Ira
That was Brent then indeed with a Kay.
My take on the duct tape is that it limits the sounds coming back into the mando to resinate, especially amplified noises.
The instrument becomes almost like a speaker and sends the sounds back towards the mics and all of a sudden feedback.
I am sure there are some Freq specs that an audio engineer can explain...
