I would appreciate it if you all would give this song a listen; it is my MySpace profile song for the moment. It isn't perfect but people have really taken to it. I just upgraded my personal studio to a new MacBook Pro and Logic Studio 8 and wanted to record something to see how it works. In keeping with my eclectic “Americana Blues Rock” style I recorded this little piece using my handmade mandolin for the lead track and my new maple bodied Martin 6 string for the rhythm. It isn’t flawless but those who have heard it think that I have found a cool style.

What do you think? Is there an appreciation for stuff like this? I could easily do an entire CD of this type of stuff but I fear no one really wants to hear stuff like this.

For those of you wondering; the mandolin is a 2006 Old Time F4 3 Point built by Kevin Mathers; www.oldtimemandolin.com

Answers to common questions that I have already recieved.
1) I get audio in and out of the computer with a Tascam US428 interface; it records 4 tracks at once.
2) For a mic I used a Audio Technica 2020 which I blended with the Aura in the Martin. My mandolin has an internal McIntyre SBT and an internal Crown Mini Condensor Mic ran into a Baggs MixPro. I use a Mackie mixer.
3) Yes; it is an original composition.

The tune is nice, the guitar sounds great but I do not like the mandolin tone at all. Sounds like my mandolins have sounded when the action was too low. Kind of thin, and like the strings aren't vibrating fully.

Very nice playing, a good feeling. I am not sure I would like a whole album like that, but as a tune on that album its nice.

I agree about the distinct difference in tone quality between the guitar and mandolin.

Thanks for the feedback.

Since recording it I have scalloped my fingerboard extension, switched to a graphite bridge and raised the action on the mandolin so I think that its tone has improved. The Martin has the factory Fishman Aura system which records really nice when mixed with the AT2020 mic. I'll have to recut it sometime.

I sometimes like to record noodles for ideas and thought that I was on to a good feel.
