The Audio-Technica Pro 70 Mic (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/AudioTechnica-PRO-70-Cardioid-Condenser-Lavaliere-Instrument-Microphone?sku=270618) would be my suggestions as well.

De Armond used to make a "monkey on a stick" mandolin pickup (like their electric guitar pickups). #No longer made, but you can find them pretty regularly on eB*y. #

The following are piezo pickups, not magnetic pickups (like the guitar ones you're talking about).

The Dean Markley "stick-on" piezo pickups work (reasonably) well on a mando:

Barcus Berry also makes an "Outsider" pickup:

(I'm not sure I agree with Elderly that the Barcus Berry is an "excellent choice for mandolins," but they do work.)

I have a Shadow transducer pickup, which attaches with 6the use of a reusable sitcky tape or putty. I place it just behind the bridge at the treble end. It is small, it has both a tone control and a volume control. It sounds just great.
Elderly, for about $90.00.

You may want to check out the D-TAR Soundspots. #Here is the link: #http://www.d-tar.com/soundspots.shtml #If you never heard of D-TAR it is a collaboration between Seymour Duncan and Rick Turner, so there is some credibility there. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #I have not used the Soundspots, but I have their Solstice pre-amp I use with my Bourgois/Baggs M1 combo and my Collings/AT Pro37 combo and have had nothing but great results with it. #They are pretty reasonable. #I believe they are under $100. #

I have been trying out a K&K One-Spot, and using reusaable sticky tape to mount it right behind the bridge. So far it seems to be working just fine. I paid $29.00

the dean markley Stick on Pickup i have sounds much better than my friends fishman bridge transducer. and it's only 39 bucks at elderly (29 musicians friend, but elderly is better to deal with) the only thing is you either have to hook into an amp or an eq pedal ( danelectro or beringer 29 bucks)to get enough level for a PA. just follow the directions on placement and you have a remarkable range of tone options (i place mine on the bass side about .25" back from the bridge WOODY! )

I also tie the cable to my tailpiece cover with the leather thong I always tie around it (to reduce dirty tones)

there is only 1 issue with this pickup, it is slightly movement sensitive, but a lot less than a microphone pickup would be.

another option would be to look up how to make a piezo transducer from radio shack parts, this will only cost you about 5 bucks if you have a soldering gun, and sounds almost as good as the DM pickup.

I also have the removable Dean Markley, it is very convenient and reliable. I slide it inside the treble side F hole and stick it anywhere I can close to the bridge. Then I just wrap the chord around my endpin with the strap to hold it in place. It is called the Dean Markley "Artist" transducer pickup. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
