Hi, my name is Jim and I'm a music junkie. I subscribe to Vintage Guitar, Guitar Player, Bluegrass Unlimited, & Acoustic Guitar. I used to subscribe to Frets & Mandocrucian Digest.
Am I typical here as far as reading music related material? I also have bought the hard & soft bound books relating to instruments and music genres. How about a list of what you all read?

Hi Jim Simpson,

Have you ever read Mo Jo? It's a good magazine. Kinda expensive though.

ima,
Yes, I have but only for free at Barnes & Nobles. I do buy a latte' while I read it. There are some others like that that I will brouse but not buy. I think Mojo features compilation cd's from time to time and I do like that they feature articles on old psychedelic bands. My 1st love - bluegrass, 2nd - psych/60's.

I get Acoustic Guitar. It's probably better than most, but I don't think I am going to renew. IMHO magazines, especially magazines about hobbies, are kind of a wasteland nowadays. If you include the actual ads and add the articles that are thinly veiled ads, they are about 80% advertising. And the reader has to pay for the privledge of being advertised to. The 20% that is left is generally what I call "brain candy." The title and headline may be inticing and the article might be diverting to read, but you don't wind up with much substance at the end. Even if all that that weren't true, I would rather listen to music and play music than read about music. The Cafe' here is really my only exception and I think it is because of the interaction and connection with people.

i read mojo & buy it too, ("it's the nat'l geographic of rock journalism" so sayth my bro dan allen), i read rolling stone, spin #& vintage guitar at work, read/scan at 'coustric guitar, guitar player, uncut, punk planet, the wire, no depression, bluegrass unlimited and whatever hard rockin guitar mag has an article on jimi hendrix or tony iommi that month at borders or barnes & noble. plus i regularly buy any book on any musician that interest me (you should #see my book shelf) & i regularly read/post on the igs & velvet rope forums besides here. i buy about 4 to 6 used cds a month & i trade lots of live music & have a backlog right now of about 20 #cdrs to listen too #right now(just got these great realtime travelers boards...). sick. and proud of it.

Acoustic Guitar, Guitar Player, Guitarist, Bass Player, Rolling Stone (kids like it more than me), and sometimes a variety of others if there's an interesting article. Used to get Vintage Guitar but it suddenly got hard to find here and I haven't got around to subscribing. Sing Out, Dirty Linen, Folk Roots, BBC Music, and others occassionally.

Peace, Mooh.

Hey All,

The only music mag I read is Mandolin Magazine - not yet mentioned - curious.

Oh Yeah my wife gets Rolling Stone occasionally I look at it. Especially their lists of the "greatest".

EasyEd - is there a website for Mandolin Magazine on which I could subscribe? I've been looking around a little bit, but to no avail.

Hey All,

Nathaniel try:

http://www.mandolinmagazine.com/

upper right is a suscribe button.

Note that if you live in Canada it's cheaper to buy it at the local music store (if they carry it) than to suscribe. Wierd but true and I've no idea why.

Take Care! -Ed-

The best reading is right here on The Mandolin Cafe. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It is honest and sometimes skewed opinions on whatever the subject may be. However opinions are like another body part and everyone has one of their own. But they are Mandolin friendly and I love reading here and writing from time to time. Birds of a feather.....

For those of you even vaguely interested in recording, I highly recommend Tape Op (http://www.tapeop.com/) magazine...

It's chock-full of interesting articles about how to make quality recordings, gear reviews, interviews with recording artists and engineers, etc etc.

It's aimed more towards the home recordist, and is very inspiring for those with not a lot of gear and a ton of questions....

And the best part?

It's free! #

Thanks everyone!
I am glad I'm not the only sick person here. Now enough reading, I've got to get to sleep so I can get up early and scrounge for instruments at yard sales.

One other mag that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is Flatpicking Guitar magazine. It is roughly the guitar equivilent to Mandolin magazine (e.g. one primary interview with a major player, a builder, a repair column, and a good bit of tab from proponants of differing styles). Those two are my main source of reading material.

I subscribe to Bluegrass Unlimited. I had a subscription to Acoustic Guitar for seven years, then one day decided I had had enough. I pick up a copy of No Depression now and then on the newstand - good stuff about older artists, but alt-country music doesn't do as much for me as I hoped it would. Over the years I've subscribed to others, including Sing Out, Mugwumps, Strings, Country Music, and others, most of which I still have stored away. Sometimes reading a 20-year magazine is like reading it all over again.
