What do you guys think about this? Not that I can afford but it would be a good buy for someone that is wanting a MM.

Yeah, if only I had the money I'd grab that MM on ebay. Too bad I have a mortgage to pay. It looks great.

Shoot, just take out a home equity loan. The mrs. won't mind. It's even tax deductible http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hey, carleshicks, is your Fern a varnished model? If so, it probably is worth $8600.

No It is just the good old lacquer model. And i was just joking. As much as I would love to have a master model I realy love this Fern.

OK, I admit it, I bought the damn thing-the price was too good to pass up. Lord knows what it sounds like. I have faith if Charlie signed it. Charlie, do you want to weigh in on this? I will let you all on this one after it is shipped. Rich

Did you buy it outside of Ebay???
All it says on Ebay is that the seller has closed the auction as the item is no longer available.
With zero bids!!!

Buy it Now was 8600. So I guess he brought it now. Congratulations.

Yes, Evan, I bought it outside of EBAY. I had talked to the seller before. Apparently it had been owned by a fiddle player who briefly tried mando and went back to fiddle. I figured that any MM in the mid 8000s is a good buy. We will see. Rich

better yet Rich, remember the great MK tour that Dale sponsored a year or so ago? How about a MM tour, you'll make some new friends and if nothing else a great way to turn it into a distressed model at fairly low cost.....i've only heard one MM but it was one of the best mando's i've heard next to Tony Williamsons Loar (or was it his fern?) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Rich .. you got a good deal.. Should be a very nice MM

If I could convince her to do that I would. It would probably be a great investment and we'd hardly notice the extra payment. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Congratulations Rich, I am very jealous. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I hope it serves you well. I'm sure it will be a great mando.

Wow, that's a lot of mando for someone who just wanted to try playing the mando for the first time. Congrats on your purchase Rich. Let us know how she is when you get her.

If your new Master Model (new to you) is anything like mine, you will never be sorry...not for a minute...for buying it. I wish you many happy years of picking!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Thanks guys for the great response. When I am in debtor's prison or the mando detox center I will be thinking of you. I am debating whether to have my casket built large enough to take the mando with me. But then again, it may burn up in the flames below. Anyway, I will report on what arrives next week. Again, its always fun on this website. Rich

These MMs are really nice sounding instruments and I think current dealer cost is 11k or better so I think you bought well. Mine is really opening up to be a huge sounding instrument. Best of luck you just bought a lifetime of pleasure.

I am happy to say that the Master Model arrived in one piece. #The only thing I found slightly different than a brand new instrument is some finish checking around the top scroll area. In fact, it makes it look like a distressed model. #I enjoyed the care of instrument instruction from Gibson which #told me not to store it under my bed...darn. The bass response has a strong woody tone-it is wonderful to hear. Here's some pics. No, it is not for sale. Rich

Hey Rich,
I saw under the "Post a picture of your Pegasus" thread that you have a Gil and a Nugget. How does your new Gibson compare? Have you ordered a Peg for that one as well? Congrats on a nice looking mando.

Rich Michaud
Jun-07-2004, 11:10am
Yes, I have ordered another Peg. This time, tangerine. I found this past weekend that my gray Peg, sitting in the back of the car, windows open, in Wisconsin, part of the case in the sun, for only a short period of time, heated up to the point of very hot to the outside touch. It scared the s--- out of me. I opened the case, all was well (and cool) inside. However, it it a stern warning not to leave a case in the sun for even a short period of time. I did not have the Small Dog Case cover on it-my mistake. However, from now on, I will get light colored cases and covers if possible. As to the differences among the instruments, the Gil, the Master Model and the Nugget each have their own distinct tone, and it is almost unfair to judge among them. For bass and what I call workhorse playing, the MM is my favorite. For ease of play, (like butter) and super tone, the Gil does wonders. The Nugget is like holding a piece of balsa wood, lightness-wise; it projects like you can't believe, and should be played by all mando players to experience a unique tone that is worthy of the sticker price. All three are special. The Gil is x-braced, next winter I should be able to compare it to a tone bar Gil and will report back. Rich

Congrats, Rich! What a great addition to the collection! I bow to the master of MAS....

Should we wait until the new Gil and the Brentrup arrive and schedule the next mandolin tasting at your place?

Hope you are enjoying the new picks too.

Rich Michaud
Jun-07-2004, 2:40pm
Hey Flowerpot, thanks for your response. The "Master of MAS" is a dubious title at best. To fight my addition I have formed "MM", mando manonymous, and have scheduled a whirlwind tour to help others give up their mandos which I will retain for safekeeping... I will be bringing the mandos to our northeast get together _BoMando on June 27 here in Mass. Yes, I love the picks you sent me-thanks-excellent workmanship-great picks! By the way, I ordered a M. Lewis Wingfeather-but that will take another 18 months or so. When I die, can I use the mandos as leverage to get past the pearly gates? Rich

Hey Rich, I speak with God quite often and if you will send me one of your mandos I will ask him about the leverage and let you know what He says!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hey Rich, Thanks for the reply. I have a Peg coming any day now that I ordered last September. I too have a MM that I just absolutely love. I also have a Gil scheduled to be received Oct 2004 but Dexter says he is currently about a year behind so I guess it will be next fall. Anyway, I have been trying to figure out how I want my Gil braced and if I should get Red or Engleman for the top. I have never played a Gil with tone bars. I wonder if a Gil with a Red top and tone bars would sound so much like my MM that I would rather try a different top wood and brace pattern. Anyone out there had a chance to compare a MM to a Gil with tone bars? How do the Gils with tone bars compare to those with the X brace (I know what great instruments those are)? Does anyone out there have a Gil with tone bars that I could come play before I have to make this big decision? I live in the most northern part of Texas.

Hello. That is a good buy on the MM. I own the MM two numbers higher and it barks like a St. Bernard. You will not be disapointed.
