I found this video of Jim Richter playing this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZKPdsLsGoU&mode=related&search=) version of Angeline the Baker this morning. If there's a better version than this one out there, I want to hear it! WOW! Fantastic, Jim!!

I'm a great fan of Jim's video's on youtube. Everything he plays sounds just so amazing.
I wish that one day I can play like Jim! When I just started playing the mandolin I watched like a trillion times to his Cold Frosty Morning video, just to learn it the way he plays it.

Thanks for the compliments, though personally, I'm rather embarrassed by the Angeline the Baker video. I love the simplicity of Angeline the Baker and I wanked all over it, mostly losing the melody (and the timing!). I don't want to sell myself short, because there are some good things in there. But there's a handful that I go "why'd I do that?"

As far as old time things I posted, I really did like my arrangement of Cold Frosty Morning, one of the first things I learned on banjo 25 years ago. So thanks for the compliment regarding that one.

Now the blues things I do like and feel good about, cause that's who I am. As much as I love Monroe, Compton, White, et al, I feel like I'm trying too hard to get "that sound." As far as the blues stuff, there aren't too many doing what I'm doing, so I feel that I can forge my own thing. Same's true of the blues-rock covers, such as Voodoo Chile.

Again, thanks for the compliments. I've got two album projects in the works--an old-time/blues outting with my musical buddy Gordon Bonham and the other's a solo blues project. Your positive feedback makes me think that the recording projects will be time and money well spent.

Jim,
I'm never dissapointed watching your videos. You do the trad stuff well and the other stuff (Voodoo Chile) never fails to bring a smile to my face. Good luck with your projects.

Jim:

I'd like to say thanks for the Angeline video. I have to admit when I first saw it, I thought something like "Woah, nice playing, but he really over-embellished that!" Then you posted and indicated you kind of had the same perspective and I thought, "OK, that's cool. For just messing around that's some great stuff." But then I picked up the mando and started noodling with some of your musical ideas and simplified them, partially because I'm not as good a player as you are and partially because I too like the simplicity of that tune. I have been playing that tune for years and I really feel like you just gave me a whole different perspective on it that I like a lot. Whether you were "wanking" or not, thanks a bunch. I'm glad you posted it.

These were my thoughts, exactly, John. It was that first 1/3 or so, of the tune that most attracted me. I'm always borrowing phrases and licks for ATB from different players. This one rocks!

Hey, your ending is the same as a lot of my endings on most of my tunes! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sounds good!

Jim, great vid, I thought you pretty much nailed what you were doing. I especially liked the part at the end, seriously-warts and all is good, unless it's all warts, and this wasn't...does that make sense?

Voodoo Child was pretty awesome fun, btw.
