Starting a new auction site is difficult since eBay has a large user base already which does include people interested in stringed instruments. There have been other attempts at other auctions sites including those for instruments but those pale in comparison. You need interested bidders -- at least 2 -- to get any decent prices. eBay's strength is in numbers.
There are plenty of classified listings for stringed instruments. The one here on the Cafe is the absolute best for selling mandolins. There are others for guitars, violins and other instruments.
