View Full Version : Looking for a couple books
Can anyone help me locate copies of these books? I seem to have lost mine somewhere along the way
The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory:

I wish. That set seems to be the holy grail of old-time fiddle books. I have the recordings and I know a few people who have the books, but they would never part with them. University of Missouri Press published them, but they are out of print. I looked into having thier research department do custom copies for me once, but it was several hundred dollars, so I passed. I just borrow them when I need them. I have heard that Christeson's widow is still alive and owns the rights. It would be great if someone would re-publish them.

Dan, I have both books and I treasure them because my Aunt Billie helped with the transcriptions for OTFR I and II. Is there any thing from the books that you need or do you want copies of the actual books. Billie Anderton plays violin for the symphony in Arlington, Virginia. Doug in Vermont
Looking for the whole books really. Specifically Jack Danielson's reel transcription.. I leared it on my copies ages ago but they seem to have gone missing when we moved to England http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

There appears to be one available HERE (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/0826201512/ref=dp_olp_2/702-3358035-3524829), but it's expensive.

I don't know how close these are to the way they are written out in the book, but there are some on-line at http://www.mountainsentinel.com/fiddlebanjo.php#tunes
I believe the Norman Blake version of Jack Danielson's Reel is available in the TEF files on MandoZine.

#1 has been out of print for some time and can sometimes be found with used and/or rare book dealers...at a premium. I've never seen one for less than $300.
#2 was still available at retail prices/outlets when last I checked about a year or two ago.
There are or were albums of recordings from book #1 that were not as expensive, IIRC. It's been a while since I searched, though.
Good luck!

I too have been looking for this set of books, but now realize thanks to these posts that even if I did find them, that I could not afford them even if I found them! #What I am specifically looking for now is a tune called Shenandoah Valley Waltz. #Fiddler's Companion lists it as being in Vol. 2 of the Repretory on page 157. #Can anyone help me with this? #Thank #you in advance! # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #Sincerely, Shelly Langley

Norman Blake said he played Jack Danielson's reel,"straight out of Christeson's book."

After much searching, I found my copy of the first volume and the matching lp. I bought them about 30 years ago, thinking I'd some day learn to read music. So far I haven't.
I'd love to see them go to a "good home." Is there some way I can donate them or auction them off to the Butch fund?
They're both in great shape.

I have volume 1, bought it when it was in print, there's some great tunes in there. I don't know the link, but I've seen a pdf of vol 1 available online. I wish they'd do that with Vol 2... I don't have that one, or the budget to buy it on ebay.

Sounds as though this is due for reprinting. Has anyone approached the rights' holder (ie, the widow or the publisher) and suggested that there may be a market for a republication or for people to sign up for it on a subscription only basis. With used copies changing hands infrequently and at such a high price, time seems ripe to bring this out again.

Look if you need to demonstrate numbers of potential buyers in order to get it reprinted - count me among them.

Both volumes were published by the University of Missouri Press (http://press.umsystem.edu/). Looks like you have at least three people interested. You may as well contact them.
Then again, knowing lots of old time players who are pretty tight with their money there may very well be a reason that it was not reprinted.
I was quite lucky to get mine as new. Perhaps these could be "reprinted" as electronic files tho by the U of M press. Prodction costs would certainly be less than a print edition.
Bought vol 1 on ebay. Paid a premium, eek!
Contact Charlie Walden, he has a web site, you can google him to find it. He is a walking dictionary of Missouri fiddling, he knew Christeson and helped with the books. If anyone knows where they could be found it would be Charlie.
I believe he is in the Chicago area, but he has a web site and you can contact him there. Good luck.

Just snagged both volumes on this Friday night on eBay. Everyone else must have a life on Friday nights because there wasn't much action on them. I got em for a fraction of what they've been going for. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I have both volumes in my search engine on eBay and they come up quite often. It seems that sellers put either volume up at least every couple of weeks...they know they are valuable.
Saw both volumes go for $52 each plus shipping last night from the same seller (must have been you Don..if so you got a bargain!).

That was me, indeed. The ones I've bid on before eventually sold for over $200. I got lucky.
