Some folks like to fish with a fly rod, some use a bobber and live bait and on occassion you find someone that just likes to TROLL!

I'm listening to them right now, and I sure don't smell anything foul.
Edit to add ... who hypes up the Blue Sky Boys? I figured they are one of those acts you find because you already like what they do. I pretty much knew what I was getting into, and they met my expectations perfectly. I've been a fan since that first listening.

Please, "they stink" is not the kind of evaluation we need on this board. What specifically is wrong with their sound, according to you? Then we would at least be able to comment. Please do not degrade the generally high quality of discussions here.

To tell you the truth, I love them too, I just wanted to stir up some real red blooded defense of the Blue Sky Boys.
QUIT THAT, STOP THAT, QUIT THAT TICKLING ME!

Who hypes up the Blue Sky Boys?
I guess Hoffmannia2k7 is the sort of guy who hypes up the BSBs. Go figure. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

The late Paul Buskirk said that the Bolicks were good players and good business men. As long as there was a market for the music they were selling they managed to support their families.

Around 1970 I happened on a bluegrass festival in PA and got to meet the Blue Sky Boys. I bought an album from them which they signed. I don't recall an odor but do remember them as incredibly polite and humble.
Their style has always been a little "soft" for my taste but really made sense having met them. The one thing that sticks out in my mind was the fact that the mandolin player (was it Bill?) sang a great tenor to his brother while occasionally playing what I'd call baritone on the mandolin at the same time.
Regardless of their odor, that's still impressive to me.

One of the great brother duets, and for mandolin players, a great example of how to use the mandolin for vocal accompaniment. Achingly pure vocal harmonies, and an interesting repertoire ranging from traditional ballads, through 19th-century sentimental songs, to recent "hillbilly" and gospel numbers.
So, I'm glad to rise to the bait, trolling or not. I think the Bolick Bros. are worth listening to, by anyone who enjoys traditional American country music.

The Blue Sky Boys have always sounded--and smelled--very sweet and soothing to me. Their renditions of "Alabama" and "Are You from Dixie?" are balm for jangled nerves.

Maybe, I was trolling, but I just wanted to hear some input on what other mandolin players think of the Blue Sky Boys. After reading some other posts I figured people would only respond to something negative. I will try to keep the sanctity of the message board in mind from now on, I'm sorry.

I always thought they did the best version of "Hills of Roane County". they showed how harmonies could be sung and laid the ground work for alot of successful acts. plus Bill wasn't no slouch on the mandolin

BSB,one of the greatest guitar/mando duos. Love their music. My favorite recording was the LP on County Records. It was in recorded in one of their living rooms, very intimate, raw recording. Brought out the duo essence w/out that studio sound. wish i could sound like that pickin in my living room! great harmonies. I had the pleasure of talking with Bill Bolick on the phone about 10yrs ago. I had searched and searched for his number. Finally found it. Told me some pretty cool stories. I was floored by the fact that I was talking to a Blue Sky Boy, a guy who was recording and performing since the 30s!
