Just wondered if you guys caught the 1918 F-4 on PBS Antiques Roadshow last night. The guy appraised it at around $4000. The owner said he bought it back in the day for $75!

I know a guy who has one of the same vintage. His wife bought it for him in southern California in the 50's for $50.

What I find frustrating about the instruments shown on the Roadshow is that no one ever plays one. They show how the toys work, they page through the books, they rock the rocking chairs but no one ever seems to strum the guitars , mandolins ect. C'mon - give me a G chord for crying out loud. { Rant over }

Actually Wesley, I saw an appraiser do some strums on a nice 20's vintage Bacon Sultana tenor banjo.

I think they quote the highest price you COULD get at auction so its not that you're going to get that much. Yeah, its too bad they don't discuss if its playable or just
a wall hanger.

About two years ago they had a Gibson L-5 Loar signed guitar on there and they didn`t play it either....I forget what it was appraised at, but it was up there...Willie

Hey Willie -- good to see you're still out there and visiting this site.
Maybe these appraisers don't know how to play these instruments or they're like me and don't want to show how untalented they are.

Yeah I saw that... I have a mando student who owns an F4 just one year younger than that I one, I believe, and I play it every once in a while. #Hers looks to be in much nicer shape than the one on TV. #Very interesting sound, not good in any way for bluegrass, but very cool nonetheless.
