I second what John is recommending. He told me about these powder-based aniline dyes a couple years ago, and I have had good luck with them. John's point to me was that it's easier to get the colors you want with red, yellow, black, etc than with dark walnut, mission brown, dark vintage, etc. Makes good sense to me. I use the alcohol based powder dyes, you can also get water based.

I believe the MEK-borne liquid concentrates are "converted metallic salt" dyes derived from aniline, and are a good deal more light-fast than conventional aniline. #I did a quick sun test, and it proved to be rather dramatic.

I've used the trans-tint dyes for finish touch up with repairs. I can mix them with shellac or oil varnishes for coloring crack repairs, etc. I'd use the anilines for new work

try woodcrafters....they have a good alcohol dye with lots of different colors that can be mixed.....

I bought some water soluble wood dyes from Paxton Woodcrafters
Paxton Dyes (http://www.paxtonwood.com/dye.html)

Sold in 1 ounce jars ($6.95). #You dissolve the dye in 1 pint(~ 500 mL) of hot deionized water. #(The metal-free water is important as metals are ofter chelated by the dyes and this can alter the color). #

This makes a stock dye that you can dilute 1:2. #I keep my stock solutions of dye in air tight brown glass bottles, store in a cool dark location. #They will last as long as you will.

They do a great job on hardwoods - very easy to use.
