View Full Version : What about the 60's A 50 Gibson

May-25-2004, 8:02am
I haven;t played mine for 10 years. I played mostly from the classical repetoire. I have been told that the 60's Gibson A series didn't have much sound. Now, of course, my instrument needs to wake up after all this time. I would like opinions on the sound of this vintage as compared to earlier years. If it does not wake uo soon I will buy another model. I need to get a consensus on the potential sound wuality of this model/year to help me decide what to do.

I guess it depends on what your expectations are and what you want this mandolin to do. I have a late 50's A - 50 and it is a very nice little mando. It does not have nearly as nice a tone as the earlier A models - it is not made of solid woods as I understand - but it plays well, sounds good and I used to play it a lot. Definitely not a "banjo killer" in terms of volume. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Thanks for the response. As I uderstand it, the A 50 is solid top with Maple sides and back. The A 40 is plywood top with Mahogany sides and back. I guess I'll stay with mine for a while.

I think you'll be happy with it. Probably the best mando in that price range IMHO. Speaking of my humble-but-worthless-opinion thanks for the info on the construction of the A50.
