Marty appeared at the Edmonton Folk Festival and blew everyone away. He was in a workshop jam with the Fabulous Superlatives, Darryl Scott and Roy Forbes that was amazing. Great tunes and songs, but what impressed me the most was the joy and abandon with which they all played. To see musicians of this calibre having this much fun was inspiring and it was Stuart leading the way, supporting everyone with huge smiles at every cool lick played. He was usually the last to take a solo if he took one at all. A special treat were Harry Stinson on drums and Kenny Malone on the conga, two Nashville legends for sure. They sang a capella Staples Family gospel songs, blues, bluegrass and some killer old country songs. The mainstage evening show was more of the same and what I noticed was that Marty only sang two of his radio hits (guys who are not getting the radio hits tend to rehash the same old songs) but did an amazing versions of Dark as a Dungeon, Working on a Building and more. Kenny Vaughn played some great rockabilly guitar the honkytonk stuff while Marty picked pretty real steel guitar licks on his Telly. He also played a 10 minute solo mandolin number alone on the stage, I love where his heart is!
On the bg and gospel stuff Stinson would come down off the drums and sing some great high harmony parts.
I always dug Marty Stuart but I found a new respect for his playing and his joy in performing.
