I just traded one of my mandos for a 3/4 size violin for my boys to play around with. How can I tell what kind it is or if it is a quality instrument? There is no label on the inside. The tuners have copper in the center. The word GERMANY is small on the bottom. It is old but I have no idea how old. It sounds good, and is in good shape but I have no idea what it is. Can anyone help?

It is probably a factory made German violin from the early 20th century. They made thousands of them, and most are still around. Not worth a lot of money, but if it plays well and sounds good, you did well.

Others will correct me if I am wrong, but I think a 3/4 violin only has to be playable and sound decent. It doesn't have to be great. Its a transition instrument to get them playing. Should they like it and keep with it, they will eventually need a full sized violin anyway.

You will then trade it with someone for a mandolin! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

My son went through the various small size violins. His teacher told me that it is difficult to get a smaller size violin to sound great as there is less material to vibrate - makes sense.
