I have learned a nice, bouncy little tune - The Girl I Left Behind Me (in G). #Does anyone have any suggestions for good tunes that would fit well in a medley with this one?
Thanks!

Well, just messing around, there were two that I was gravitating toward. If you wanted to go a little darker in the medly, I like "Big Scioty." If you want to get even "bouncier," I like "Sailor's Hornpipe." But there are lots and lots of choices.

"Charming Betsy, is basically the same timing and would fit fine, Lee

Our group does a medley using "Girl I Left Behind" "Garry Owen" and "Turkey In The Straw". Changing to 6/8 to 4/4 is a bit tough but it can work well. Another one that can work would be "Kesh Jig, Girl Left Behind, Turkey In the Straw"

Good luck and have fun

Anyone remember the old Warren Paint jingle that used to play on the Grand Ole Opry? Wasn't that the tune to "The Girl I left Behind Me"?

"I paint my house with Warren Paint
Put Warren on the barn too
And the folks come down from miles around
They say it looks like new".

Glenn Miller's Orchestra played it as a part of "American Patrol", he would start with the "American Patrol" tune, bridge with a part from "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean" and then to "The Girl I Left Behind" and then back to "American Patrol". If you are playing for listeners old enough to remember the big bands, that would would be a hit. Also, seeing as "American Patrol" is musically related to "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree", I think "The Girl I Left Behind" and "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" could work as well.

I just tried it out, but instead of "Don't Sit" I kept wanting to play "American Patrol". It doesn't come out as old-timey as I'd like.

The Girl is also the same tune with the words of the song "Waxie's Dargle", a rowdy pub song. Check the version from the Gourds of Austin TX.

Glenn Miller also recorded "Little Brown Jug" another good old time #. According to the movie The Glenn Miller Story
it was a favorite song of his wife's.

Using the same tune -- for you Civil War music purveyors, check out I Goes To Fight Mit Sigel on one of the Cathy Barton/Dave Para albums of Civil War songs from Missouri. It's a comic song about a German immigrant joining the Union army to fight under Gen. Franz Sigel.

Check out Jay Ungar & Molly Mason's Civil War CD. They play that song and a number of others. I play it with the Battle Hymn of the Republic and the Battle Cry of Freedom.

I know this is not the Classical section of the board but...

I like to play Mouret's Premier Suite des Symphonies: Rondeau, best known as the theme for the PBS show Masterpiece Theatre, as a companion piece to "The Girl I Left Behind Me." The Mouret piece is usually performed in D (Allen Richmond's Dayotn Mandolin Orchestra does a nice version in C on their CD Creole Belles), but it sits very well on the mandolin in G. Plus, speeding it up to match the tempo for The Girl I Left Behind Me isn't against the rules if you're daring enough to combine classical and foilk music. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I like to play, as a set, Off to California/Girl I Left Behind Me/Swinging on a Gate. Just enough similarity to go together, and enough difference to keep it interesting.

Changing rhythms like that can sound really cool, but you have to remember not to do it at a dance or people might get hurt. ;)

Ok how about this:

Behind the Bush in the Garden
Haste to the Wedding
Off to California
The Girl I Left Behind Me

It tells the whole tragic story.

I used to play Liberty after it.
