I've become enamored of songs that I never want to end -

Shannandoah Falls
Grub Springs
Mrs. MacLeods Reel

Any others you'd add to this list?

[QUOTE] a reall nice groove of angeline the baker?

What is about that tune? I often play rhythm guitar on it and it gets almost hypnotic.

Falls of Richmond is another one.

To me it isn't the tune. It's who I'm playing with and whether or not we get "in the groove." I have gotten in the groove with "Cluck Old Hen," which is a tune I am not all that wild about. Other times, every tune the jam played, including my favorites, just seemed tedious to play.

However, some tunes that lately I like to play a lot are:
> Snake River Reel
> Big Scioty
> Step Around Johnny (my theme tune!)
> Lamplighter's Hornpipe
> Ship in the Clouds

One tune that's been coming up a lot in the local old time jams is "Five Miles From Town." #It's hypnotic, fairly crooked, and is the only old-time tune I know where a Gmaj7 chord fits well! #Once you get the timing figured out, it's a lot of fun to play.

Angeline the Baker and Cold Frosty Morning and Sandy River Bell.

If you like Angeline the Baker you would probably like Sandy River Bell.

Oh and Wild Rose of the Mountain - what a tune.

Why are these tunes so addicting and endless? The A part cries out for the B part, like oreos need milk. The B part, in turn, yearns for the A part to satisfy it, like a glass of milk leaves you wanting an oreo.

Especially Wild Rose of the Mountain. Each part just aches for the other part. The tune may stop but it never ends.

These tunes are legal, inexpensive, and non-fattening addictions. What more could you want.

I concur with Wild Rose of the Mountain; such a pretty melody, epecially on the mandolin. And Five Miles From Town--is that also a J.P. Fraley tune?

fatt-dad,
I don't have any tab for "Five Miles From Town", since I learned it pretty much by ear at the local jams. #It is attributed to Clyde Davenport. #A quick Google search turned up a recording of him playing it: #Five Miles From town (http://www.aca-dla.org/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/Berea&CISOPTR=1006&REC=13)

There is a Marx Brothers film (don't remember the title) in which Chico is playing a tune on the piano which goes around and around. As it repeats for about the third time Groucho is getting more and more disgusted. Chico turns to Groucho and says,

"I can't think of the ending."

Groucho replys,

"I can't think of anything else."

Well, a tune that is HARD to end is Remington Ride. Coming off the long E, it seems to....just go on and on.

Midnight On The Water; Maidens Prayer; Colored Aristocracy.

Once all the lyrics to ANGELINA BAKER, composed by Stephen Foster, have been SUNG, there's no reason for it to continue. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

yeah, Angeline the baker... I think cuz it's easy to cross pick.
At the last tuesday night session, i think we played it 4 times. (I kept steering us into it.) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

But for me, I'd have to say Colley's Reel. Once I start that one I can't stop. That groove thing.

Most OT fiddle tunes don't end ... that's what differentiates them from a dental appointment. (emoticon of your choice here)

Swallow Tail Jig...I can play forever - even after you finish it. People have come back to me the next day saying they can't get the tune out of their head.

A lot of the slides go like perpetual motion, such as "O'Keefe's" or "Come in from the Rain". I especially like the places in "O'Keefe's" where there are natural places to hesitate for two, four, or even eight beats, while the pulse keeps going until you take up the melody again.
