I did some background checking but couldn't find a thread. #I was taling with a young fellow today who has inherited an older (he did not specify how old) mandolin from his grandfather was was wondering what it would take to restring as a lefty. #

I have not seen the mando so I do not know if there is any restriction of strining the opposite direction in the tail piece, but told him that I didn't thing that it woud be a huge issue. #Could I have been wrong? #Will he need to purchase a special "lefty" bridge? #

Anyway, I told him that I would ask the Experts out here on the board and get back to him...Thanks for taking a look and helping me to confirm or correct the infomation that I gave him.

At a minimum he is going to need a lefty bridge or at least the saddle if its not a 1 piece bridge and a new nut with the string slots cut for a lefty.

I am not an Expert but I play a lefty on the Cafe http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi MLT, I'm not a luthier but play left-handed and as far as I know, for basic playability, your friend will need a nut and bridge slotted for a left-handed string installation. #Also, if he has an adjustable, Loar style bridge, he will probably want one with a lefty oriented saddle. #There shouldn't be any issues with the tailpiece.

Search is your friend. There are many threads regarding this process. Here are two:

Converting to Lefty 2 (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=41152;hl=lefty)
