New Breedlove Quartz or used Rigel A+ deluxe. Which
would you go for??

The Rigel, and emphatically. No...wait...don't go for a Rigel because the fingerboard will spoil you for anything else. I went from an A+ to a better sounding F style mando, but I sure do miss the action and frets on the Rigel. Best to you, and enjoy playing your next mando!

I have a very used (I prefer the term "naturally distressed," LOL!) Rigel A+ Deluxe that I really like. I played a new Quartz today at a store. Nice mando, but not even in the same league as my Rigel. The only mando in the A+'s price range that is real competition, IMHO, is a Collings MT. The Collings has better tone and I like the looks better. The A+ still has the edge on playability, though. Also, I doubt you will find an MF for sale used. They are too new.

Hey Steve,

It has been interesting watching your posts over the last couple of weeks as you narrow down your search http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

About a year ago, I chose the Rigel A+ Deluxe (new at the time) over a Breedlove Quartz after playing each for about an hour. #I liked the feel of the Rigel neck a lot better, and the tone spoke more to me (the Breedlove was also sweet though). #I was also interested in the integrated factory-installed pickup, as my band plays through a PA and I was done with trying to stay positioned correctly in front of both a vocal mike and an instrument mike at the same time. #

My Rigel has been a blast over the last year. #

Good luck with your choice!

I believe Rigel has a transferable warranty you can buy on used mandolins if that's a factor.

Steve,

I've decided to sell my Rigel A+ Deluxe, so if you're still considering this as an option, you can find the Rigel listed in the Cafe Classifieds. It's number 9769 posted on 5/17

Rigel-- As the others have pointed out, the neck will spoil you. #I bought an A+ deluxe and then later a G-110, and the action is identical. Both were previously owned before I bought them. Pretty tough to beat the mando "bang for the buck" that a gently used Rigel offers.

If $$$ are an issue, go with the Quartz as they are a fine mando. Mando Medic say's (& I agree) that it takes 3 months of hard playing to open a new Breedlove up.......but when they do open up, they are very good. The playability is right up there with the Rigel A+ as well.
