As mike has intimated, rouge is a french word for red. #Rogue, meaning a person that is shady, is the word and maker you are looking for, I think.

ps I was emailed that it is bad form to comment on spelling and have a spelling mistake in that commnent. As such I apologize and changed "shadey" to "shady." I am a very poor speller and only recognized the original error because I have made that error myself.

Isn't this like voting on a "most virtuous" award at bordello? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You French speakers are lost. You want the "Mandoline Cafe'."

According to Google, there is a "Cafe Mandoline" in Richmond, Virginia.

Being an Oregonian by birth and a resident of New Jersey by circumstance I can state with no reservations that the Rogue brand name used by Musicians Friend on their stringed instruments is taken not from the dictionary definition but from the river (http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/rogue-siskiyou/) of the same name. Musicians Friend was (and maybe still is) headquartered in Medford, Oregon.

By the way Calvin, the Kentucky would be my choice as well.

Being from Kentucky, I'd vote for that. Never ever been to Baton Rouge though.

For mandos, I'd pick Kentucky for the name, and Rogue for the price. Wouldnt buy either without playing first.

Also, a river in southern Oregon.
Musician's friend is/used to be, HQ'd in Medford OR, not too far away.
the Rogue river has a fair amount of white water rapids , popular and divided up in days so the V8 powered upstream boats don't meet the downstream Kayaks. surprise!

if you have a big enough order, Pac-Rim Asian factorys will put Your name on it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

All of the Rouges from Musician's Friend that my students have ever purchased were horrid ... I can't even call them instruments. At least with a good set up, the Kentucky line will give you good value for the money that you have spent. I can't give you an endorsement for the Rouge line at all. I have never seen one that was worth the material (whatever they use) it was made from.

I've never played a Kentucky.
My $29 Rogue was quite playable and just good enough to make me want another mandolin.
I have passed the Rogue down to my brother-in-law who is also enjoying it.

I replaced the Rogue with a $49 clearance Fullerton Nottingham, which plays and sounds good enough to keep me happy for the forseable future.

On the recommendations of both Steve from Gianna violins, and Robert from folkmusician.com (both of whom I trust), a Kentucky would probably have been what I had gotten if the Fullerton hadn't come a long. They are apparently considered among the best at the lowest end of the price spectrum.
