You might try pages three and four of this --

(Hit the More button on the bottom to get to pages three and four)
One problem with the FRETS discussion on looping
"The string does not need to loop around the peghead more than about half a turn in order to work smoothly. It is locked firmly in place and will be easy to remove when restringing time comes around again"
This might be fine with the wrapped stings, but I find that the single wire stings need about 3 full turns otherwise they are likely to slip, and, the instrument will need tuning more often.
The other thing I like to do before cutting off the excess wire is to allow about 3/8 inch excess.
After cutting I take a small looping plier and bend the end DOWN (toward the wood).
If not, I have learned how to put on band aids on the pin pricks from the sharp wire ends.

I have a about a single turn on my A & E strings and they stay in tune perfectly. From my experience with both guitar and mandolin, the less wraps the better. I use the same method described in the frets link.

the trick is to loop the free end back so it winds over itself. and then it won't slip, I still go for 3x.

I just solder them to the posts. When they need changing I just buy new tuners or -better yet- a new mandolin.
