I just uploaded a YouTube clip of me playing my new Weber Fern. Lemme know what you think. It has a red spruce top. I love this thing.

Thanks, folks. That's the mic on my digital camera. Not bad, eh? Obviously, the mandolin sounds even better in person. The EXPJ74s brightened it up for me a bit from the stock GHS strings. They were good too though, just darker.

That version of Whiskey probably began when I listened to Mandozine's essential tunes version of it, and I think it was the intermediate version. Then, I blended it with Steve Kauffman's version on his two-hour bluegrass workout CD, which is great for basic version of fiddle tunes. I've learned a lot from that set. Finally, I've been playing it with my group for about two years, so some of the parts that aren't part of the tune are just places where I try to make it more interesting for the listener and myself.

I love Norman Blake's version too. I was actually turned on to the song by Yonder Mountain String Band's version on M0ountain Tracks 1. It's not the most technical version, but it's high energy for sure.

Great stuff Kevin !.I just got back from the North Wales B/Grass festival where i met a band from the Czech Republic. They were the main band & excellent musicians. The mandolin player had a Gibson F-5 signed by Bruce Weber. When he noticed that i had a Weber Mandolin,he asked if he could play it - no problem there. He was totally knocked out with the Weber 'Fern'. Compared with his Gibson,he easily got the volume & tone that he wanted. He remarked that he had to work hard to get the same tone from the Gibson, which did indeed sound good, with the Weber it was just easier to get the tone he wanted.
I played several Mandolins at the festival that were on sale, including Kristufeks (hope i spelled it right)& a Sim Daley F-5 which was a very nice instrument indeed. Sound wise, the Weber is up there with the best i played,
