what happened to your Kalamazoo? It's most likely better than either of those mandolins. I have yet to play an MK (except for the oval hole) or Kentucky KM-630 that I have liked. an Gibson A9 or Flatiron A5 would be your best bet (wouldn't you rather sound good than just be fancy), but if you have to have a scroll I would check out the J. Bovier F5, the Eastman 515 (or 615) or one of the Kentucky KM-800's or Km-1000's.

I would go with the Kentucky. I own a MK and it has issues...which is not to say that all do. From my own experiences, the Kentucky is just more consistent. Just my opinion.

I played this Kentucky KM-800 (http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/details.cfm?listId=103453642) last week. It was a good mandolin for the price, and with a set-up and new strings would make a great
F-style mandolin for not a whole lot of money.
It was pretty loud and had a nice tone, not to tinny at all. It wasn't a Gibson or a Collings in the sound dept., but it was pleasing and would hold its own at a jam.
The finish was nice and pretty thin and the top was not as thick as they used to be. Its definitely better than the KM-630s and KM-700s I have played, or any of the MK's I have encountered (I am not bashing MK, its just the ones I have played and heard didn't appeal to me).
I think the higher end Kentucky's are really starting to get alot better to compete with the Eastmans and the new J. Bovier's (http://www.jbovier.net/jbovierf5traditi.html)
I still advocate getting an A-style if you are spending under $1,000
