The distressed look is all the rage these days, Ron. I bet it's a killer.

I've been very happy with it since day one!

Ron,
Are you the Ron Pennington that wrote Old Jericho Waltz on Butch Baldassari's New Classics for Bluegrass Mandolin? Love the song and am working through it with Butch's book. Thanks!

Hi Jason!

Yes I am. Old Jericho Waltz was about the 3rd tune that I wrote with Mr. Mando. I was working with Paul Adkins and the Borderline Band when I wrote that tune, on our way to Chicago in an ice storm. I originally recorded that with my friend Ned Luberecki on an instrumental project that was only issued on cassette tape. It was called Newstrings. I am very honored that Butch liked it enough to record, and that you are learning it. Thanks Jason!

Ron you did not have to start a new thread to post more photos. You can only post one picture per post but not per thread.

Sorry about that Bill. I'm pretty new to this message board stuff.

No worries, Ron. Not a big deal at all, really. I'm curious how this Gil sounds against its later brethren. Compton's is a hoss in the mid-range, and I suppose my "ideal tone".

Man, that thing looks like it was ridden hard and put away wet. Love to see that "hard earned" distressing!

I remember seeing Ron and Ned during the Paul Adkins days back in the late 80s. #That was a great band. #As I recall, the band also included Fred Travers on dobro, another fine player. #Ron played another tune in those days that I really like called "Ghost Of Antietam." #I'm glad he's still out there making music.

I wasn't trying to bust your chops Ron. More of a FYI thing.

Steven was asking about the sound of my mando compared to other Gilchrists. Of the few that I've played, I think it sounds more like Mike Compton's. It's very dry and woody but bright too. It really mics great either onstage or in a studio. That's cool that Andy saw the Borderline Band back then. We had a lot of fun together and played some pretty good music too. "Ghost of Antietam" was one of the earliest compositions that "Mr. Mando" and I wrote together. I always enjoyed playing that tune with those guys, they had the right feeling for it. My band, Lonesome Road, has been encouraging me to record a mando record featuring some of my tunes. If I do, I would like to re-record "Ghost of Antietam".

I'd love to hear this tune, Ron. Any way to snag a copy?

Hey Steven!

Ned Luberecki and I recorded it on an all instrumental tape,(that ancient technology), called Newstrings. I'm not sure if I still have any of those anymore. I will check into it if you would like.

Two of my favorite subjects--Civil War and mandolin instrumentals. Ever post to YouTube?

Yeah Ron, terrific mandolin pickin, for sure. Is that Newstrings thing the one with tunes like Sweet Ga. Brown, and the banjo/guitar Turkey In The Straw? I have that on cassette from a LONG time ago. Who plays fiddle on Caravan? Shades of Vassar, but I don't think it's him, or is it?

Steven,

I used to live in Boonsboro Maryland just 6 miles from Sharpsburg.
The Newstrings recording that Ned and I did was all original banjo and mandolin instrumental tunes except for our try at "Minor Swing". It came out in 1989. I do like playing all those tunes that Alan mentioned. When I worked with Gary Ferguson we aleays played "Sweet Georgia Brown" and it was always fun to watch and listen to Tom Gray play his bass solos. He's a hoss!

Sounds right up my alley, without a doubt. I'd love to track one of these down, but I honestly don't have a cassette player anymore. The last one went belly-up on me and I just never bothered to replace it. If any enterprising soul has moved this to CD, please let me know.

Thanks for the info, Ron. Then I am confusing a tape I have with your Newstrings recording. It does sound like you on the mandolin, tunes are SGB, Caravan, a Scruggs tune, the guitar playing sounds sort of Django, not so much Tony Rice style. Maybe it's Gary Ferguson. Or maybe it's not you at all http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Hi Ron, Good to hear your still around. Paul Adkins and Borderline played a couple of shows for The Southwest Bluegrass Club in Garland Tx. in the early 90s. One of your songs was about an uncle of yours. I think I saw you later with Gary Fergouson. I think you were living in Rogers Ar. at that time.I remember you played some great mandolin but can't remember all the tunes.Keep up the good works.

Oops, it should read Skaggs. This is why people like me (mando choppers over 50) need constant supervision and should not be left alone in front of the computer.

I saw Doyle Lawson and QS at a festival earlier this summer and he was playing one. Probably his "beater" for outdoor weather situations but it sounded great! Of course, that could be just Doyle doing his magic too. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
