John McGann has graciously offered us a free gyspy jazz mandolin lesson (http://www.mandolincafe.com/archives/django1.html). I promised to set up a discussion area dedicated to this lesson for anyone with questions about the content provided within the lesson, and this will be linked from the lesson. Thanks, John!

The techniques do make a difference on mandolin, but I hear the biggest contrast between alternate picking and the rest stroke technique on the octave mandolin- maybe it's a function of the string tension being looser on my OM.
Like any new technique, it's humiliating at first, because mastery of alternate picking doesn't mean instant mastering of crosspicking or gypsy picking. Go slow, be mindful, use a metronome, have patience, and don't scream too loud http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
