View Full Version : Blue mule
I have messed around with Blue Mule from time to time and found it fairly challenging. #Vocally, it has a lot of words and can be downright tongue-twisting. #I think I can get that part with enough practice, though (I mean, if I can make it though Watching The Detectives, this ought to be within my grasp). #
What I'm having the most trouble with are the ascending chords that follow "Riding with the wind, she's come and gone again". #I just can't hear them properly, for some reason.
The other part is the repeating outtro. #It seems to be a descending little groove. #I can pick out the lead, but need help with the rhythm.
The version I like best is (I guess) the original, from Muleskinner.
That takes me back.
I think the chords after "Riding with the wind, she's come and gone again". are a set of diminished inversions (same voicing, up 3 frets), I'd have to check.
And if you like Peter Rowan, this Bud's for you.
That sounds like it would be about right (if I only knew what a diminished inversion was http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif ). #
There are 4 chords in the set; give me an example of the shape and I'll fool around with it.
And do have another Bud for me - I love Peter Rowan. #I think he's one of the most underrated rhythm guitarists (he's probably forgot more bass runs than I'll ever know) and finest singers in bluegrass. #Midnight On The Stormy Deep with the Blue Grass Boys absolutely kills.

3243 for a G dim. Not sure what key this tune is in, but I would guess G major. If so, I think this chord is it. Just move it up 3 frets until you run out of room http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
3...2...4...3...in G (writing on inside of wrist with pen) okay, got it. #
If this helps break the logjam, I'll be in the woodshed this weekend. #Woo hoo!
Bingo - that's the shape! Only I'm afraid the song may be in B (better go get the disc and check), which makes it waaaay high up the neck for me to get those last 2 without buzzing pretty badly. That's okay, though, I'll drop down to pick up the F dim and A dim.
Thanks for the help, AlanN - man, I love this place!

Glad it worked out. And there's no need to start way up the neck. If the tune is in B chord, the beauty of the dim chord is that any note in that shape can be the dim chord. So, if the diminished is the tonic dim (that is, B dim), just take that shape and start the ascension on 3454.
