View Full Version : Wife wants a dobro
My wife, a classically trained organist with no string instrument experience, has informed me that she wishes to take up the dobro/reso guitar. Yes!!!! She has asked me to help find an instrument and instructional material. Is there anything comparable to Mandolincafe out there in dobro land? I have all the typical newbie questions, but no one to ask.
If this works out, we may turn out some interesting duets!

Hi,
The Steel Guitar Forum (http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/index.php) has a 'without pedals' section which includes plenty of dobro players so they'll be useful. I used that forum a lot when I played pedal steel and they were really helpful.

Thanks, Matt. Just what I'm looking for.

My suggestion for an instrument is to look at the inexpensive Regals imported by our good friends at Saga (the same folks that bring in the Kentucky mandolins). They are decent little instruments that won't break the bank but sound and play well enough to get you started.

My brother plays the dobro. It seems to be a very difficult instrument to play well. Resonation is probably the best resource. I think Jerry Douglas' website has a message board as well.
Thanks for the suggestions. I've joined ResoNation. This is a win-win situation for me. If The Lovely Wife changes her mind, I'll have a new instrument to mess with. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

You are one lucky man!
Congrats!
You should seriously consider the Beard authorized Gold Tone resonator guitars. Very good value for the dollar. Dobro is a fun instrument to play and I agree, difficult to play well.
