when i play my hand is wrapped around the neck much differently than other players. instead of having my hand relaxed in a "J" shape around the mando-neck, my hand position resembles more of a check mark. in other words, my hand is pushing the neck closer to my fingers rather than staying relaxed.
is this right?
do i need to learn to play differently?

Do whatever is comfortable and what doesn't take away from your abilities. That is the easiest thing I can tell you. Many people focus too much on their technique and when you watch Sam Bush it looks like he couldn't hit one string but he does. I don't think there really is a "proper" way to do it. As long as you can do what you want to and it's not painful or anything like that, keep it the way it is. I do agree that there are certain improper techniques that can take away from your playing, but no set rule of thumb for the "proper" technique. Music is all about realizing what your limitations are and what your strengths are and drawing from the strengths. Just my opinion though.
