It's the lowest priced Rigel, but how does it rate
compare to Fenders, Kentuckys, etc?

One of my students has an A-natural, and asked me this question recently, since he wasn't getting such good tone. I showed him that it's actually quite a nice-sounding mandolin.
IMHO, the A-natural is a whole different category from those others you mention. The Fender is a beginning-level instrument in a low price range; the Kentucky goes from a low-to-mid-level beginning instrument (except for a few high-end Kentuckys that you hardly ever hear about). The A-natural is a near-professional level instrument available in a moderate price range, and a logical next step for those upgrading from beginner's instruments.

What he said...
Couldn't have put it better myself. "Professional" is always a relative term, but close inspection and playing of these instruments will tell you Rigel makes nothing less than a world class product, even at this "entry" level.

blows the doors off the others.... unless you're talking Sumi-made Kentucky's
I think the Rigels are the best deal going. I've not met one yet that I didn't think sounded very nice!

Everyone always talks about how nice these things sound and how wonderful the neck is. My upgrade plans have so far been centered around A9/F9 and Weber Gallatins (maple upgrade). Since I will not have the chance to sample one any time soon, how does the tone compare? I need a mando that can handle BG as well as folk and other styles for church. Thanks.
