Looking for a good A style mando under $1000.

there is a Rigel A+ in the classifieds for $975; pretty good deal and those babies sound great.
Or, you can try to pick up a Flatiron Performer A or an old Gibson A2/A4, but those are tough to find under a grand in good condition...
FOTW has the A Natural for about 1000, not as nice as the A+, but you can always tradeup later on with their 100% trade-in guarantee. Mickey has explained some of the differences twixt the two on their website.

you can still find the old gibson A's for a good price, if you don't have to have "the gibson"on the peghead.
also, greg boyd has a nice used absaroka for $1195. i know that's a little more than you want to spend, but it's pretty nice for the $$$. plus, it's red.
