View Full Version : Fathers & Sons In Bluegrass

mandopete

Okay, now that we've looked at the brother duet, I'm wondering about any examples of fathers and sons playing together in bluegrass. #My not-so-hidden agenda is that I have a radio broadcast on Father's Day and I want to put together some special programming for that day. #Here's what I've come up with.....

Bill and James Monroe
Del and Ronnie and Robbie McCoury
Scott and Chris Thile

Can anyone think of others?

How in the world did I forget Doc and Merle. You could even use Doc and Merle's son too as an example of Grandpa and Grandson...

How about Uncle Dave Macon and his son Dorris? #Not modern bluegrass, but certainly early stars of the Opry on banjo, guitar and vocals.

Mandopete, I just have to know- What does your ham/jail quote mean?
To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. #The quote is attributed to my 11 year old son, Keenan. #He has a propensity for philosophy that I have yet to truly comprehend.

......oh yeah, he plays drums too #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Scotti, you're thinking of Mitch Harrell. #Just saw him on April 24th up here in Northern Ontario. #Great concert and a great guy. #His band (South River Express) had Ray Legere guesting on violin. #Yowza!

I saw Chris Miller with Goins, he really impressed me, the apple don't fall far...although, he's surpassed his Dad in hipness, I think. Have you ever jammed with Chris? Very cool about Dee, he must be 35 or so?

I am really enjoying this "thread' - hadn't really realized there were so many father/son[s] combinations - although I recognize most mentioned now!! - There's a story[!?] re: Jimmy Martin concerning his son Ray. On a show - I've forgotten where - Jimmy FIRED(!#) Ray 'cause he "..wadn't playin' the way he was taught..." - of course it all "blew-over".. ; but a great - and additional "Martin story" - second ONLY to "Monroe-stories"... only perhaps more bizare - and "funnier.. maybe..?!## - {by the way.., has anybody gotten a "health update" on the King.??} - Carry on please. Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

One that I just thought of is Ben Eldridge (Seldom Scene) and his son (cant remember his name), who is now playing guitar with the Scene. The son is a quite a picker in a Tony Rice sense of the word. I don't think he has recorded anything with dad yet.

Please let me know of any recorded examples of fathers and sons (and daughters).

Wasn't Rhonda Vincent in a band with her mom amd dad early on?

ManjoMan
May-20-2004, 8:38am
The Sally Mt. Show - I can't remember the dad's name
but this is the Vincent Family (Darren, Rhonda, etc.)

Then there is the Marksmen - was once made up of two
father & son teams - I just can't place their names
right now.

How about the Cox family..
Father on Fiddle and son on banjo. Wish I knew their names. The sisters sing like angels with them.

Speaking of Ray Martin, there's a photo of him, Jimmy and J.D. Crowe getting a trio at the 1974 Gettysburg (Pa) fester. The book is called The Big Book of Bluegrass by Marilyn Kochman. Anybody know if that's a Loar Ray is holding? Dang near looks like one.

May-20-2004, 9:41am
Alan: like to have seen that one. Jimmy w. JD!! - shades of the "classic" Sunny Mtn. Boys! - "Big" Bill Emerson was also a graduate of that school... Regards, Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Grisman's one son, Monroe played guitar on his 1993 release "Common Chord".

His other son, I forget his name, plays the bass. He is also credited with the drawing on the cover of the "Not for Kids Only" cd.

Saw John Hartfords son playing with Jerry Jeff Walker on TV last week. Played a mandolin on one song but mostly played electric guitar. I dont know if they ever played together. Not bluegrass I guess but father son pickers.

John and Jamie Hartford recorded a record together. Its not bluegrass but all this father/son talk reminds me of my favorite pair, the late great Shavers.

The Bluegrass DIamonds combine it all, two brothers and a son. Now that's some harmonizing!

AlanN
May-21-2004, 5:14am
Yeah, John and Jamie H., forgot about them. I saw them at the Peaceful Valley fest 1988 or 89, Jamie impressed the heck out of me on mando.

Fiddler Jay Ungar has a fiddling daughter.

Singer/songwriter Guy Clark (not bluegrass admitedly, but he'll have some fans here I'm sure) has a son who plays bass with him.

I got my names mixed up. Jamie Hartford was playing with Billy Joe Shavers not Jerry Jeff Walker.

How about The Lilly Brothers. I saw them at a couple of festivals last summer, and Everett at 79 had his son playing bass. I don't know about Bea, he wasn't there, but they were still billed as the Lilly Brothers.
