I'm sure this has been discussed here already, but I must have missed it. I came across a film on the internet called Bluegrass Journey, and ordered the DVD. It arrived yesterday, and I was extremely happy with the purchase. Some real heavyweights, like Del McCoury and band, Tim O'Brien, Thile, Tony Rice, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Peter Rowan and his band. What made me happy was the fact that so much mandolin was featured. This is sort of a look at the Grey Fox festival in New York, but the performances are all well-recorded, and nearly uninterrupted by voice-overs, unlike Grateful Dawg and others. Seventeen separate songs, and 15 scenes from the festival, as well as some lobby and hotel room jams from IBMA. All great stuff, especially a scene from a mandolin workshop at the festival featuring O'Brien, Thile and Ronnie McCoury taking turns on "Bluegrass Stomp." They were supposedly demonstrating the Monroe style in answer to a fan's question, but Thile must not have been listening, because he went pretty far from ole Bill's rendition on his turn. Cool to see these three different styles on one song. Lots of O'Brien for his many fans out there, and some good chunks of Del and Ronnie, as well as Thile and Nickel Creek. Also featured: Rhonda Vincent, Bob Paisley and Southern Grass, Jerry Douglas, Don Rigsby & Friends, Lonesome River Band, Buddy Meriam, and a snip of a 7 or 8 year old Thile in the "Bluegrass Youth All Stars." I highly recommend this film. Not the definitive bluegrass film or anything, but a nice mix of modern and traditional styles, with very little banjo! Sorry if this was discussed before. Frank

I agree. This is a very, very good DVD. I've chatted with the owner/creator of this and he said one of the only complaints he's received is there's "too much mandolin on it"! I won't even touch that one. I think it's marvelous. I recommend picking up a copy at Elderly (http://www.elderly.com/videos/items/624-DVD1.htm).

I think a DVD of MandoFest should have been or should be made...what do you all think?...
Scott, you listening? maybe a way could be worked up to take care of some of the costs to do so?...

Well, if I can pull off my plans for next year that are in the back of my mind then Mandofest will surely be DVD worthy.
