I've recently seen the Austin Tx band the Meat Purveyors (TMP) and really enjoyed their show. I've since bought 3 CDs. Really fun combination of traditional bluegrass (often a Monroe or Stanley song), some original tunes with a edgey alcohol influenced attitude, and interesting covers of other genre songs (everything from Elvis to Madonna).

Oh, I have to mention that TMP's mando player Peter Stiles flat tears it up.

Anyone else a fan? Anyone know other similar bands that play original high energy bluegrass? Anyone familiar with Stiles playing?

Hi Don

I'll finally come out from lurking in the board's shadows to get my first post!

Try Split Lip Rayfield for speedy bluegrass type music. Not really traditional (as far as I understand traditional to be Bill Monroe etc) but fast, acoustic and fun!!

Cheers

Welcome Graeme,

Maybe Split Lip Rayfield will be considered traditional if they ever find the "Lost Monroe Basement Kitchen Pizza Tapes". You know the ones where Big Mon sang about:

- Killing his girlfriend, cutting her up and feeding her to the dogs

- Blowing up the railroad tracks

- Being addicted to a pinball machine

- Living on welfare checks

- Making love with the ranchers daughter, sister & other sister

Thanks and Welcome Graeme,
I'm already turned onto SLR and have 2 CDs. They're a lot of fun and some really blistering guitar. they're also on the same label (bloodshot records out of chicago) as TMP. One of the things I really like about TMP is the mando playing.

Thanks for the welcome guys!!

Don't know what is says about me that I've been lurking for months and only come out of the woodwork to recommend SLR..........never mind taking part in the big debates (Monroe -Thile, Weber-Gibson etc etc!!)

Will give the Meat Purveyors a go, as I've not got a bad CD from Bloodshot yet!!

Cheers
