I watched the hand picked and played by Danny Roberts custom Fern F5 Varnish finish go for $6450 tonight. Even with adding the heafty $325 shipping or $452 Sales Tax if you pick it up in person to it that's still under $7000 for a MM Varnished Fern. Did anyone expect this one to bring more than that? I sure did! I guess I was more surprised that Danny even let it go but then I guess he don't have a problem getting another one probably better than this one.

I saw it, it was a Flip it fast auction. It wasn't technically an MM but in all respects it was http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Nonetheless someone got a good deal, I'm still a little bummed about the $7500 Hieden a few weeks ago but at least a member got it.

Ebay. Right not really an MM but more like an MM Fern.
It had all that the MMs have but Fern inlay. Still a Gibson F5 only a few years old. Didn't that same mandolin appear a few ago for a buy it now at $9500 from the Flip it GA people?

Getting a little "clubby", aren't we?

We're kind of like an addiction support group, so why not ?

"We're kind of like an addiction support group, so why not ?"

Curious use of syntax.
Is this a group which supports addicts or a group that supports addiction?
And ... who are "we"?
I should have taken Groucho's advice.

Well, not exactly - although, they both have a varnish finish.

It had Waverly tuners with all silver parts, varnish finish and carried the model number of F5V not F5L and with Danny in on it from the begining I don't see why it wasn't a Fern MM and now would qualify as a genuine Fern DMM. All it needed was a regular MM pickguard.

I dunno....call me crazy (it's certainly been done before) but I think $6500-7000 is about right for a varnished Fern. Maybe a tad more with the Waverlies. If I was in the market for one, I sure wouldn't pay any more than that. Now the Heiden for $7500, that sounds like a DEAL!!

And as far as I can tell, we are a group that supports the addiction. At least that's why I hang out here! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I must be dumb about these prices then because Janet Davis list the F5Fern Varnish at $11,190. She has the MM at $18,110 and the DMM at $25,554. I know she says call for discount but with the new pricing structure these few Gibson dealers have to adhear to you won't get but about a 10% discount if that. Add shipping/insurance and it's up there! State tax added if you live in her state. Pick one up in Nashville at the Mall and you'll pay that heafty Tenn. tax. I still say this one because it was hand picked by the man who makes them and has special appointments the regular F5V Fern does not have that under $7000 is a great buy.

It was a good buy because if Danny owned it probably sounded real good. Don't know what you mean by clubby but I do have a mandolin problem. The first step is admitting there's a problem. I'm pretty much over the Heiden though and have set sail for an Ellis... MAS full steam ahead.

Yes, the Heiden was a great deal and it will take a lot more than $7500 to get away from me. Absolutely, a superb mandolin in every respect. I'd recommend a Heiden for anyone looking for a high-quality mando. There was another one in the classifieds for $8K.

I missed that one. Another good price on a Heiden. I'm pretty set on an Ellis though and it's a few months out.

I believe that the Fern has a Sitka top unlike the Red Spruce used for MM.

The Varnish Ferns are advertised to have Sitka, but there have been a few red spruce ones. The MM also uses hide glue, while the Varnish Fern does not. The extension block is a different wood.

If it sounds great type top really don't matter. I've heard some great Cedar tops. Even the original '22 Loar specs denoted different woods could be used for the top. That must be some pretty expensive hide glue if the difference between the F5V and the MM is $6,920. I need to buy some stock in the Hide Glue Company, INC!

Do you remember this MM topic ...
Even Big Joe could not completely explain why some 'master models' are really not 'master models', or was it ... ?

When is it a master model?? (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=42825;hl=jk245)
