I sold my gibson A because the neck was too large for me to play on. I switch back and forth with mandolins with smaller necks. What year or model oval hole can I get with the smaller diameter neck.?

My gibson A9 (made in June 2006) measured only 1 1/16" wide at the nut... and that is being generous on the width. So the string spacing would be less than that. Actually much smaller that I prefer. I'm not used to trying to put four finger tips in a space the size of a nickle.

Look for an A with a truss rod, or a snakehead. These seem to run narrower. But, there is a variety of neck sizes among these as well.

Are you referring to the width of the fingerboard or the depth of the neck/fingerboard?

I am mostly concerned about the depth of the neck. the one I had was almost v-shaped. thanks

I see... this is characteristic of the 'teens models. The necks on snakeheads of the Loar period are more rounded but seem to be of similar depth ... I haven't measured mine. Even so, I find the latter more comfortable. The fingerboard is decidedly narrower by about 1/8". I consider my hands to be of "average" size (9" span) and am at home with either instrument.
You may have to go with a modern instrument to find what you're looking for.

Good luck
