I just picked up the two Rebel reissues of prime Red Allen
material from the mid-1960's, much of it never before released
on CD until. There is some great picking here, and Allen's singing is among the best I've heard anyone
sing anytime anywhere, and fills out the period before and after the classic Wakefield/Allen Folkways LP. # I used to own the County LP which had some of Grisman's early work with Allen's Kentuckians, but I had never run across the other early stuff (pre-1964)back in the Detroit of the mid-1960's. #Again, Allen and John Duffy were my two favorites back then, and I am struck again with the same type of #intensity and soul that both singers displayed back then. Stylistically, there had to be cross pollonization there, although Allen had been prominent since his mid-50's work with the Osborne Brothers on MGM. #I only wish I had been in DC back in 1964 , as I am now. #There must have been something in the drinking water around DC back then. #Hey, Willie, you were around those guys back then. #It must have been a trip. #Allen must have been a huge influence on Duffy.

I should have, also specifically mentioned the incredible instrumental contributions of both Wakefield and Scotty
Stoneman. #However, these two reissues are mainly justly titled as Red Allen CD's. #I do feel that Wakefield should have gotten equal billing on the Folkways reissue, though, as that disc was primarily a two man collaboration. #The majority of mandolin on the first CD "Keep On Going" is Wayne Yates of the Yates Brothers (Bill on bass), the Yates carry most of the
harmony chores on this early pre-1964 collection. # This is great stuff.
