There have been several threads about Tonegard in recent weeks...I ordered one for my Sam Bush...while it feels a little like leaning into a wire fence at first, the change it made in volume to an already loud mandolin really surprised me and the guys in the band...good product and worth the dough...

have there been prior comments that it it may damage the finish to a varnished mandolin?

Yes, I've heard some people say they damaged the finish but I think it turned out that the protective rubber pieces that cover the metal slid off, causing the damage.

Actually, the rubber eats the finish and causes the damage. Anything you press hard on the varnish like that may damage the finish. However, it does keep your body away from the mandolin and reduces the sweat stains that also eat the varnish. So, while it may leave a couple little marks that can be french polished out, it reduces the greater damage that may be caused by not using one. I other words, have at it!

As a side question, does anyone know if a toneguard will fit on the mando in a standard Weber shaped case?

A second side question. #Do most owners prefer the 'Sunrise' design or the 'Deco' design? #Perhaps one is more comfortable or more stable than the other?

I have the standard design - I think it's the 'Sunrise'...fits like a glove to the mandolin and fits perfectly in the Calton case...as an aside, I also have an 'armrest' attached to my mandolin and the Tonegard works fine around it...I find it does take a little getting used to from the 'wire fence' aspect - it's not unpleasant or uncomfortable - just different.

Hey Big Joe,

Did I see one of these things on Roland White's new Gibson?
