I am going today to get my Epi MM50 setup by a pro luthier.

When I take it to them, I want to ask questions to see what they are going to do to it. I don't want to get it back a week later with only a new set of strings. Humm, this is hard to put in words but how do I make sure they won't rip me off?

Is there anything special I should ask for? What will they say they will do to it? Do I need to bring a set of strings for them to put on or will they provide that? I know it's hard to say exactly, just give me a ballpark on what to expect. Sorry I don't mean to sound so dumb http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Thanks!

Nicholas

All these are questions you should ask the luthier, BTW. My expectations for a set up are (notnecessarily the order performed):
> Overall check of the instrument
> Check the action of tuners and lubricate
> Check the nut slot heights and correct as necessary
> Check the neck relief and adjust as necessary
> Check the frets for wear and level. Replace, level and crown as necessary.
> Adjust bridge for height and intonation
> Replace strings (optional, but recommended)
> Clean the instrument up
> Return it to you with a smile! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As to who provides the new strings, that is between you and the luthier.

Mando Johnny is right on with his response. It really depends on what your mandolin actually needs as to how much you will have to pay. A new instrument usually needs the nut adjusted and, often but not always, the frets dressed, maybe the truss rod adjusted, and probably set the bridge for intonation and action.

Thanks for the info gentlmen!

The luthier was out so I'll have to take it in on Saturday 22nd.

Mr. Lewis those F5s of yours are gorgeous! Would you consider a trade of an Epiphone MM-50? I'm a really good guy! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
