So I found out about this short documentary from a local folk school bulletin board. It's with Mike Seeger and Alice Gerrard and features Tommy Jarrell, Roscoe Holcomb, and a whole mess of other good folks.

In the credits, one musician named was Paul Hostetter. I wonder if that's the same PH from the cafe?

Anyway, if you have 30 minutes, it's worth the watch.

PS: if that is "our" Paul H., someone who recognizes him should note the point of time of his appearance.

Paul - are you in this?

Thanks, Don! I've marked it and will make the time. Looks like fun from a quick skim.

Thanks, Don! I loved the whole film (video?). Watching Libba Cotten play almost made me cry. And Mike Seeger is a bloomin' genius, if there ever was one!

Great find Don. I have been a fan of Jody Stecher for many years now, but that is the first time I have actualy seen him play anything on film, as is true with nearly everyone else on this. Outstanding stuff!

Yep, that's our boy Paul. Also lots of other great Berkeley musicians in there, including Hank Bradley, Jody Stecher, and Eric and Suzy Thompson. Thanks for the link. Mike Seeger is one of the great musicians of our time. Along with John Cohen and Tom Paley with the New Lost City Ramblers, he brought old-time music out of the hills to the larger world.

That's Alice of the recent Tom Brad and Alice. Great Old Time CDs I've recommended before. Thanks for the movie. It's great stuff. Moving.

Hey, DD, if I'm not mistaken, that's "Colored Aristocracy," indeed a great tune. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

DD: I dunno what the tune is behind the opening narrative, but I'll take Mike's word for it.

"Shall We Gather At The River" at the start of the "actual" film itself, is an old church song I remember as a boy.

I appreciate the connection with Mike Seeger, having seen this and most of the other videos on that site.

Thanks for sharing that, Don. #I enjoyed seeing Jody Stecher in the film having just seen he and Eric Thompson live at the San Francisco Festival of the Mandolins last month. #Jody is a really great mandolin player and he played his version of "Roaring Mary" that was top-notch. #Anybody know of a good mandolin recording of this song? #I found a really simple version of the music on Table-Edit. #Jody and Eric also did a Scottish medly of "The Devil In the Kitchen, Muillean Dubh & Major Manson" that was off the charts good.

Cheers.
