Help a beginner start a collection of Bluegrass CD that are a must have! I would like to find some that will not be such a full band that the Mandolin gets lost in the mix. Can you suggest a few?
Thanks for your help

Here are a few I'd recommend (not really a "10 Must Have Bluegrass CDs" list, but more one that emphasizes the mandolin).

Bill Monroe, "Anthology"

Bill Monroe, "Off the Record Volume One, Live Recordings 1956-1969"

Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza

Sam Bush (any solo CD -"Laps in Seven" is his most recent)

Chris Henry "Monroe Approved"

The Bluegrass Album Band (any CD)

David Grisman & Tony Rice, "Tone Poems"

Mike Compton & David Long, "Stomp"

Just to add to the already great list: Shawn Camp-Live at the Station Inn. For some reason I keep going back to this as a listening favorite.

Tony Rice, #'Manzanita' (no collection is complete without it)

Bill Monroe, 'Live at Mechanics Hall' (of course the Bear family CDs are also must haves. . .but this is an excellent starter).

The David Grisman Rounder CD (an absolute classic)!

Hot Rize (either the first CD just titled 'Hot Rize' or the second 'Radio Boogie'. Of course once you've got either of those you won't be happy until you've got all of them).

The self-titled 'JD Crowe and the New South' from 1975. Not particularly mandolin heavy, but with JD, Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, and Jerry Douglas on dobro it too is a Must Have CD.

There are, of course, many many more that deserve mention but these are the once I feel no bluegrass collection should be without.
