I am now taking a bluegrass ensemble class where I'm playing with a bunch of other students. The basic format is we learn the chords of a tune, then the melody of the tune, then its up to each individual to come up with a solo. Everybody gets to/HAS TO take a solo for each song. While I'm not shy and don't mind putting myself out there, I was curious if there was a resource out there that would teach me a lot of the fundamental bluegrass 'licks'

Try Niles Hokkanen's book/CD sets (including "Hot Licks for Hot Picks" and "Hot Solos for Bluegrass Mandolin") available from him at:

(NFI.) Not a website, but great stuff.

what JB said, intensive Monroe listening is where the ideas of licks started to make sense to me

This Brad Davis book/cd cuts right to the punch:
" 50 hot licks & where they fit in songs! " (http://workshoprecords.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=995&category_id=fc1a3538a85f1ec82b50380d22db1915&ps_session=ed7003b7cc5407f05081c407d4e32e19)

Just a quick correction, Music Moosse is .org, not .com. It's a fun site that has been helpful to this intermediate beginner. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I prefer to learn licks from tune solos themselves rather than just on their own, as I think I get a better taste of their context, as well as learning a new complete solo if I don't feel like writing my own or improvising http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . On that note, you should look at all the "practice tunes" that Mandozine has here (http://www.mandozine.com/music/zipfiles.php), it's a great resource for picking up tunes, solos, and licks.

Monroe-ish licks (http://www.oldschoolband.com/Licks-1.htm)
All sources of licks are good - tunes, books, collections. Joe Carr put out a thing years ago, 50 Hot Licks. I use a few, like his minor9 run. It's closed, so can be moved around. Dawn Watson also had a nice bag of tricks.
It all goes into the primordial ooze for regurgitation at some point http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
