Anyone else have this happen? I put on my favorite brand X strings (same brand, same gauge, same mandolin, same bridge) that I've been using for the last two years; and they are totally lifeless, won't stay in tune, no volume etc. I've checked the tailpiece (Allen) no problems that I can see. The strings were kept in the case (travelight) inside an airconditioned house and are maybe a month old since I got them. Any thoughts?

Write to the company, sending the strings back. They will prob send a replacement and send the set on to their R&D dept.

yeah,

it happens. put on a new set and you'll be able to see right away if the ones on there are bad, and it is not just a seasonal setup issue. those do occur this time of year.

Did you change them one at a time, or did you take the old set completely off and then put the new set on? Big difference.

Always one at a time. The old strings (I'd be embarassed to say how long were on) sounded much better.

I recently put on a new set of J74s, which I've used for years. #Within a week both D strings broke at the bridge. #I don't recall ever having broken a wound string, but I order single replacement A and E strings from Elderly. #I replaced both D strings and have been playing the strings for a month with no problems. #I guess strings are like many products - once in a while you get a dud.

I stopped using Monels after one set wouldn't tune properly (tune both strings to G and one of them wouldn't intonate up the neck). I thought it was the mando. Brought it to my luthier, who said it was just a bad set of strings.
