I am brand new to this and need as many opinions as to the best beginner mandolin out there. Renting seems a waste of moola.
Appreciate any help.
Hi. I'm one of the students as well. I designed the mandolin with the swirl-y sound hole. I am the only one in the class who used the CNC for the actual process of building the mandolin. I have some physical limitations with my hands and had to come up with a way to do the project. The hardest part for me was just that, figuring out how to do it! Ws have a CNC in the architecture school at Rice, but not very many people know how to use it, and it was quite a chore. I also cut the top of my instrument on the laser cutter.
Both the top and back of mine are flat, but it has a great sound, and is very loud (there is a lot of space between the strings and the top). The top is spruce like everyone else, but the back and sides are one piece of walnut. I'll try to get some picture up soon!

mboyts - it would be helpful to know if you have a price range and/or if there is a particular style of music that interests you.

If you are concerned about making the most effective use of your money, buying used is the way to go: you will get more for your money, and the previous owner already paid for the instrument's initial depreciation. As an added bonus, if you take proper care of it, you may be able to sell it for about the same price as you purchased it -- and you can't say that about a new instrument.
