Are there any novice players in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater VA area interested in playing together (mando, guitar, etc.)?
I have been taking weekly lessons for about 9 months and would like to improve my ability to play with others (trading basic rhythm/lead etc).
If interested send me an email to: christopher.thomas2@jetblue.com

Bucket,
I hope you got some responses. Wish I were closer, but I live an hour west of Richmond. I would love to find some other mando players to learn from, play with, and jam.

When and where? I play in a circle at the White Horse Pub at Pembroke Mall on Wednesday evenings. It's an open jam and most anything goes. Mostly old-time and celtic, but it's pretty open to what ever you want to do.

Bucket,
I live in the Williamsburg area. Have been learning to play the guitar for about a year and the mando for 4 months. Where are you?

Hey Bucket I live in Norfolk. Who ya taking lessons from? I have been looking for a new teacher for a while. Closest I could find was Franklin. Great teacher but 45 minutes away and to far. I seem to be workin a lot lately but aways can work in an occasional jam.
Hey Brian I used to jam at the White Horse pub. Been a while since I was there. There were some good fiddle players there I remember. I found a closer music jam. Amy Ferebee ran one at Cora's on 21st Street for a while but not sure if they still do it anymore.
I'm game for some picking! I also play guitar and sing.

For those that asked:
I live in the Salem Woods/Kempsville section of Va. Beach.
I don't mind a drive now and than.
I take lessons at Alpa Music on VB Blvd (near the intersection of Lynnhaven and VB Blvd) from Scott Bailey.
Feel free to send me an email for any more info.

I jammed a couple of times with Amy at Cora's. It has kind of died. White Horse is still strong. That jam had it's tenth anniversary this past October. Karen and Lynn at Kelley's music also have a short session Thursday evenings, but they don't do it during the summer months. Too many other things that compete with it. Plus, Karen spends a lot of time on the water during the summer. I don't know of any others on the Southside, except for the Farmer's Market. I've never attended that one.

If you are interested in a local Bluegrass venue, the Tidewater Bluegrass Music ###. has a local show on the 3rd or 4th Saturday of every month at the Hickory Ruritan Club in the Hickory section of Chesapeake. Now that it has warmed up, there is a good bit of parking lot picking as well. If you want to see the bands (mostly local groups), it's $4 or $5 at the door unless you are a member of TBMA. Then it's free.
Hey Brian...If you'd like to jam, I live in Norfolk as well and took lessons from Scott too...small world huh? Anyway, I've been playing for about 2 years on mando...I'm not much into grass (more into a blues type thing...but been known to play country, rock, celtic and clasical), but if you'd like to jam...drop me a line at LPGuitar@aol.com....that goes for anyone in the area really...just make sure you put something like "Jam" in the header, otherwise I might think it's another ###### ad :-)

Hey Bucket guess what? I met your mando teacher at Alpha and I signed to start taking classes from him starting Sat after next. What impressed me was his love for bluegrass mandolin music and flatpicking guitar. I may study BOTH from him. Thanks for the tip to find him and I was lucky as all his slots are filled up and one student graduated and is leaving so he had only one Sat afternoon slot open.
Oh yeah by the way to everyone who is from the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk, Va Beach) I am going to the Celtic jam at the White Horse Pub Wed night and I've emailed everyone who posted here and invited and in case I missed emailing you come on down. It would be cool to meet fellow Mando Cafer's. I'll have my Taylor 810 and my cherry Flatiron.
Hope to see yall there. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

(shameless BUMP!)
Chris I signed up with Scott last week for lessons and so far so good! Thanks again for turning me on to him.
Seems like we have a lot of Eastern Virginia pickers on the Cafe. We should get together for a jam or something.
NOTHING is better for improving your musical abilities like playing with "other" musicians! So lets leave our learning CD's and DVD's and Mel Bay books at home and actually play LIVE!

If your willing to travel a little, there's a jam at Cary St. Cafe in Richmond every Sunday 12-4. There's some other ones around here, but I can't seem to find them. Any help?
Here's a link...
