I've just gotten good at tapping my toe to keep rhythm, then a "friend" sends me this......

How smart is Your Right Foot ? ?

Just try this. It is from an orthopedic surgeon............

This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's preprogrammed in your
brain!

1. WITHOUT anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction.

I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it!

You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Send it to your buddies to frustrate them too.

depends on how you draw the number 6- I am left handed, so when I drew the number 6 with my right hand, I started it from the bottom of the number rather than the top- foot didn't change direction. Maybe that was cheating?

Very interesting, indeed!

Try as I might, I couldn't keep that foot from switching when drawing the six with my dominant (right) hand. If I drew it with my left, however, no problem maintaining the clockwish circles, regarless of how I drew the six.

Switching feet resulted in the same relative results, only backwards.

Who knew?

Maybe its fortunate that your right foot isn't playing your mandolin? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

This is good - hadn't seen this particular independence drill before.

I can get it if I don't try to go too fast.

This variation (which I just tried) seems to be harder: Do the clockwise circle with the foot, and on a table (imagainary or real) make the same sized circle with the hand going counterclockwise. #Now go counterclocksie with the foot and clockwise with the hand. #Switch to the non-dominant side (harder still) and repeat.

Up the ante to the Mind-screw level: #
LH-counterclockwise, LF - clockwise, RH-counterclockwise, RF - clockwise. #OK - then add the head turning from one side to the other (no circle)!!!

This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's preprogrammed in your brain!

But with some practice you can overcome it and.... "Free yound mind and your hands will follow!!! (or in this instance, not follow. Foot actually)

Two-handed drill: #LH draw a triangle / RH draw a square. (and vice versa) . Try it going in the same direction (eg. clockwise) or contrary motion. Add the polyrhythm (3 against 4): time it so that each hand completes it's geometric figure at the same time!

Niles,
Your drill is too much for me, but it would be fun to watch you do this!!!!

A friend of mine had a teacher do this test in a college class. A student was called up and asked to do it in front of the class, and he was able to. He was told to then use his left foot, and he was able to. He then did it while standing on his head. The teacher was really flabberghasted. A month later my friend went to lunch with the talented individual, who told him that his friend had taken that course previously and when he knew he would have to take it, he practiced every day for a year until his brain could do it. :-)

OK, they are all nasty mind games...I'd hate to see any of them show up as a sobriety test http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
